Yeah, you've heard of cash money, but have you ever heard of shell money? Long before we had coins, cards and crypto, the Langalanga people of the Solomon Islands were using their own unique currency. Broken shells were carefully cut and polished into small discs and gathered into tafuliae, the ten strings. The strands came in various lengths and the different coloured shells represented different amounts, just like the colours of our banknotes today. The tafuliae were used in weddings and traditional ceremonies, as well as to trade, buy land and settle disputes. On the island of Malaita you can still even use them today. Your Pacific ancestors were financial innovators from way back. Study maths at school and carry their legacy and to the future.
